Got an old iPod you’ve been meaning to get rid of? Don’t can it just yet; the U.S. Postal Service has announced a new pilot program that will make it easier for people to discard used or obsolete small electronics in an eco-friendly, ahem, “green”, way. The “Mail Back” program, launched on Monday, works like this:You mozy down to your local Post Office, grab a free, special envelope in which to enclose your broken or obsolete iPod, PDA, or other small electronic (larger items like laptops don’t seem to be eligible), and mail it away—free of charge. Postage is covered by Clover Technologies Group, a company that recycles, remanufactures, and remarkets inkjet cartridges, laser cartridges, and small electronics.
The pilot is set for 10 areas across the country, including Washington, D.C., Chicago, LA, and San Diego, but if all goes well, this could become a national program.
